What Is Win Rate in Trading?
Win rate is the percentage of a trader’s closed trades that end in profit, calculated as winning trades divided by total trades. It measures how often your entries work out, but on its own it says nothing about how large your winners or losers are — which is why it should always be read alongside risk-reward ratio and expectancy.
Formula
Win Rate (%) = (Winning Trades ÷ Total Trades) × 100Worked example
A trader logs 40 NIFTY options trades in a month: 18 close as winners and 22 close as losers. Win rate = 18 ÷ 40 × 100 = 45%.
On its own, 45% looks mediocre. But if the average winner nets ₹4,500 and the average loser costs ₹1,200, the trader still comes out ahead: (0.45 × 4,500) − (0.55 × 1,200) = ₹1,365 of positive expectancy per trade. A sub-50% win rate with a strong risk-reward ratio can comfortably outperform a high win rate with weak risk-reward.
What's a good number?
There is no single "good" win rate — it depends entirely on the risk-reward ratio the strategy is built around. A scalper running tight 1:1 targets might need 60–70% win rate to be profitable. A trend or breakout trader aiming for 3R+ winners can be profitable at 30–40%.
As a rough guide, most sustainable retail intraday and options strategies in India land somewhere between 35% and 55%. A win rate that drifts persistently below 25–30% usually signals a broken edge unless the reward per winner is unusually large.
Common mistakes traders make with win rate
- Chasing a higher win rate by cutting winners short and letting losers run — this inflates the percentage while quietly destroying expectancy.
- Judging win rate off a small sample (10–20 trades), where normal variance can make a good system look bad or a bad system look good.
- Comparing win rate across different setups or timeframes without normalizing for strategy type — a scalp and a swing trade are not the same population.
- Treating win rate as the scoreboard instead of one input into expectancy, which is the number that actually tells you if a system makes money.
TradeMind calculates win rate automatically for every trade you log — broken down by playbook, setup, symbol, and time of day — so you can see exactly where your entries are working inside your trading journal.
